First 5-string that felt good - a Yamaha ??

Yep. Yamaha TRBX305, to be exact. I got it to learn to play 5 strings, and was knocked out by the sound and build quality of a $300 bass.

I think it looks really cool, from what I can tell in the photo you shared (viewed on my phone). Do you have better ones? I'd like to see it more closely.

I got off my a real quick and snapped a few more. Now, since you asked, let me tell you the reason why the headstock is painted.

I used the vice clamp method of bushing removal. The A tuner bushing was incredibly tight, and I admittedly cussed at an inanimate object at least twenty times. At some point the bushing decided to go all at an angle on me, probably a mere 5 degrees, and then it happened....a crack. The headstock paint, some wood, cracked w/a tiny chip. I put the vice method away, got my rubber mallet, a nail finishing tool, slowly and lightly tapped the sucker out in twenty seconds with little effort. The vice method worked great on the other three, but that A was ridiculously tight. The A hole....was not routed/bushed out properly, the diameter being less than the others. These new Yamaha’s have tuner issues, on the BB434 anyway. Still, it’s a great sounding and playing bass, and my dog is but ugly and I still have her so I’m not one to throw something away or send something back....which I wasn’t able to at that point anyway (the bass, not the dog). So, hence the paint, and why my dog wears a sweater.

The paint isn’t perfect. It reacted wildly to the layered neck, but it’ll do.
