Left of the hi-hat
I've been noodling my way through some online materials (thanks for the links in the stickies) and working with some cool books. All that is great, but I finally got the chance to dedicate time to actual lessons, and I'm looking forward to my first one tonight. My instructor seems to have a good reputation, and I've watched some of her training materials online and she has a training style that appears to mesh with my learning style.

I haven't studied music in decades, and never studied a string instrument, so I'm really starting from the beginning. It feels great to have a new challenge and to get back into music.

That's hugely exciting. Now you need to make sure you practice at least a little bit almost every day. It's the fuel that makes private lessons work.

Lots of us have done that kid thing where you go a whole week without even looking back through the lesson until the night before the next. All kinds of kid emotions just writing about it.

Committing to lessons is committing to work on the materials presented by the instructor.

Agreed 100%. I actually enjoy practicing, at least a bit, every day (most days) because it's a way for me to disconnect from everything else.

First lesson in the books, and it was really good. The instructor and I gel, and I've got a good deal of homework to work on over the next week. It was really cool to get immediate feedback and guidance as we worked on exercises and she noticed things here or there that I could tweak to make it all work better.
