I noticed that the Kiloton only has the one pickup. Doesn't that limit tone selection.

I'll 3rd this then.
I tried a Sterling shorts out and my first thought was this is a perfect guitarist's bass or bass for small handed players. Fast/smooth and easy on the hands.
Was tempted, even recommended it to guitarist friend who's wife wants to try bass, but ended up buying a Sterling Ray4HH standard scale as GC had them marked down to a ridiculous price (<1/2 the price of short scale) and I didn't have any active basses in my collection anymore.
After playing the standard for a while I'm a little underwhelmed with the preamp but I think the short scale is a passive bass.
Definitely worth a look at for the OP.
