first bass?

I havne't played either of those basses... I would take a look at the Squires as well. I played one of the Vintage Jazz's and it played very close to my MIA Fender. The neck was nice and thin and had decent action. If you do go for a 5'er check out their Active Deluxe model. For the $$ the Rondo/SX's are the best bang for the buck. I bought the 5 string w/ block's and it plays suprisingly well for the money. The grounding is poort - I get a little pop when I take my fingers off the strings (only noticable at low volumes). Copper grounding kit is its' way from Stew Mac to solve that problem.

I'm proud of you for selecting a fiver. Don't let the nattering nabobs of negitivism talk you out of it. They play fours because it's hella easy. By playing a fiver, those silly chicks at gigs won't know what to think when they say, "Oh, are you the bass player?" and you say, "No. See? This instrument has five strings. It's much harder to play because it has an odd number of strings."

Seriously, there's no disadvantage to starting on a five-string. The advantage is you won't have to buy another bass when you want to join the ranks of serious bass players, who all play fivers.

 I think that for the sake of the newbie, this post needs to be marked "sarcastic" a little more clearly.
