First build - 5 String Bolt-on

This is a first build!?

Thanks for the kind words guys. I was actually surprised at how well the first one turned out, and I think the blue one will be equally good.

I'm going to spray one more coat on the neck tonight and call it good. I'll let it sit a week or two before I start sanding and buffing.

While I'm transplanting the pickups from the orange bass to the blue one, I'm going to try to do a better job of levelling the fretboard on the orange one. Above about the 12th fret it buzzes pretty bad, so I think if I can get the playability a little better, it will be the real finishing touch.

These builds have been a lot of fun, and a real stretch of my woodworking skills (and patience). The cool thing to me is that I end up with a bass that has the specs that I want.

So last week I got the bass polished up and assembled. I spent more time getting the frets properly leveled, and took more time on the set up. As a result this one plays much nicer than the orange one. I have the orange one half-way disassembled right now, and I'm going to work the frets and setup a little better on that one to get it playing nicer.

I played the blue one at church this weekend, and it worked great. I really like the Big Singles run passive - IMO they don't need a preamp (although a nice transparent pre can obviously give you a little larger sonic pallet if you want... I always ran the EQ flat or in passive mode when they were in the orange one with the Bart pre).

So here are some kinda crappy photos in poor lighting. I tried to adjust as best I could. I'll get some better pics of it out in the sun one of these days.
