Double Bass First finger hurting in thumb position?

Hi, I'm new to this website, so I'm not sure if a thread like this has already been made... But I was wondering if someone could help me figure out what's wrong. Anytime I get into thumb position in the Dragonetti concerto, the highest joint of my index finger starts to hurt. It didn't used to, it just kind of locked (which also by the way, how do you get rid of that??) but now it hurts, not really badly, but it's just kind of bothersome. Can anything help with that?

Is the joint closest to your finger nail collapsing or can you maintain an arched finger shape?

There are a number of previous threads discussing problems. Look back around 11-27-2008 for aks 29 (page 25), 04-11-2010 for ScottyAx80 (page 18), and 05-30-2010 for Bassing around (page 17).

Cheers, DP

Maybe you just need to relax your left hand more? Maybe use your weight to hold down the string instead of pressing? The double stops in koussevitzky injured my hand when I first started playing it because 1) I was pressing instead of using my weight, and 2) i was very anxious about playing it.

it's hard to say what the problem is without seeing you play. Ask your teacher.
