First gig coming up and lads - I need your help.

First gig is on Tuesday!

I'm in a blues-rock trio and I'm singing as well as bass-playing.

Trouble is, we're a half-hour short of material. I'm not great at stage patter, so any advice on that would be great too.

I'm mostly asking you lads for blues/rock songs that would go down great in a bar populated by yuppie pricks in Central Scotland. :)

+1, for stripping, except maybe you guys could all wear random superhero costumes under business suits and play cheesey stripper music while you show them not your physical form, but your crime fighting, mustachioed, alter-egos!

or perhaps just make like the aquabats and fight some kinda prop-monster/guy in a suit.

Got that covered - I'm wearing a fez, the drummer is wearing a leopard print wooly hat and the guitarist is wearing a cowboy hat.

The logic is, if we look stupid, then it's memorable, and if we sound stupid, it's because we look stupid.

When you get to the end of your material, say someone came in late and wanted to hear their favorite song which you played before they got there. I've seen it done and it worked out fine. Heck, by late in the night, no one probably remembers what you played earlier anyways.

Fake a gear issue? For example, start a small fire in the back of your guitar players amp. put it out before any real damage occurs. You can put a frying pan sheet or 2 layers of heavy aluminum foil between the fire and the amp, to prevent long term damage.

It works.

I don't want to fake any issues. I'm just looking for suggestions on songs to cover. Apologies if this is the wrong forum, I'm a bit pissed. :P

cos edsbra tends to me more pretencious where as glasgow tends to be more about oasis covers.

as for aberdeen.... as long as theres songs about beastiality then they dont care:hiding:

Oh wait.... you're asking for songs? Just extend those blues songs out! Pick some songs that you can easily sing and know already well - that's the hard part. Then get the rest of the guys to learn 'em. Also - the talking part is easy. Speak very loudly (almost as loud as yelling) and clearly into the mic - never ever mumble. The easiest thing to do is tell people why you're going to play a song that you're about to play. If it has a bit of a story behind it, all the better (i.e. it was your mother's favorite song before she passed away, your daughter loved it when she was 6). It usually doesn't even matter if the story is true. It'll just draw people in more, and let them connect with your band more.

i used to play in a band that had similar issues.
We had a rock and roll medley, which meant we played a 12 bar style paatern in A and the singist just mixed and matched segments from as many songs that would fit as possible. It started as a 10 'song', but by the time I left the band, it had sprawled to somewhere between 20 and 45 minutes, dependant on the space we had to fill.

My old standby for situations like this one is doing Killing Floor. It's just a simple box pattern on bass that your guitarist can wanker about on for days. Lyrics are basically a couple of sentences. It was good enough for Hendrix at Monterey. ;) Zep rocked it as well...
