First gig with IEM. Verdict - Thumbs up.

Played my first gig with my new IEM system a few days ago and I gotta say what a difference.

My other bandmates got them a while ago but I didn't have the cash till now. Got the same system they have the Audio Technica M2. Found a smokin' deal on a refurbished unit on the 'Bay and also ponied up for a set of Future Sonics Atrios after seeing some good reviews on here.

Took only a few minutes really to dial them in our board has separate aux sends for monitor mixes. With the M2 I have the dual sends set up, one for the mix and one for my bass.

There's plenty of low end with the Atrios and there's more than enough clarity. Glad I spent the extra $$ on them they sound great. I can hear everything a lot better now.

Just have to get used to the actual sound of the send it's a lot different a sound than the wedges. Also no ringing in my ears after the gig which has been a bit disconcerting as of late.

So if you're thinking about switching over definitely do so I spent under $600 for the whole setup and it's well worth it!

Couple of opinions from and IEM guy....

1-Document your entire Chain...
2-Simplify it (the setup, management etc)
3-Plan an escape/option route (multiple DIs, Amp level vs Line level, broken wires etc)

4-Practice through a small $40 recording deck...

I get more IEM notes from guys that are expecting magic than planning for reality.

IT really works great -- the truth is as a new convert, we all need to plan for the situations not familiar with IEM and what you can do when a quick fix is needed.

HInt.. I have a complete diagragm (with color coded options on my pedalboard case)..... I can quickly give a competent sound guy a sheet... he can tell me (from options) where he wants my signal from, and how/what/where I can receive a monitor signal.

HInt.. pick up a Rolls PM351 or PM350..... this will allow you personal control over "more me" or less monitor

We run our own sound (or actually I run our sound ) so luckily don't have to deal with sound guys per se. Depending on the venue we use our own PA or just plug our setup into the club's existing PA. We have one rack with our 16 channel A&H board and the IEM units and processors.

The Rolls looks like a great setup for doing your own submix though.

"we do our own mix" ... a PM will allow you to alter if your ears change (sick, played next to a Marshall Plexi last night etc)......

Are you guys planning on bringing your mixer rack to all gigs?

A PM350 has 1/4 outs (discontinued) PM351 has XLR output

When running your own sound, part of doing this includes a fast no-hassle way to make personal alterations.

I use my Rolls at church. They have a wireless monitor sysytem. I was never happy with my bass sound through that system. With the Rolls I plug my bass in from the line out of my DI and the monitor pack to the other side. Headphone bliss and total control.

We always have our mixer onstage with us right behind me next to my rig. Makes it easy for some quick tweaks and if we play a place that has their own PA we just take the LR outs into 2 channels of their board. Might seem odd to some but it works well for us. We mostly play casino bars so the PA is there and we have our own system for other shows where it's needed. Same board just adding the speakers and power amp. Would appreciate a PM if you have some other ideas always up for suggestions to make it better though.
