Our band, The New Variants, sort of broke up two months ago. Two of us kept going, myself on bass and Rob on guitar and vocals are from the original lineup. We added Jessica on keyboard and vocals. The three of us have been practicing and auditioning drummers. We had a May 13 gig booked at the Whistler Racquet Club with the original lineup. We would be the first of three bands. We decided that even though we didn't have a drummer we would not cancel. After putting out the word locally we found a very good sub for the night. He had one practice with Rob and Jessica which I could not attend. It seemed like a recipe for a train wreck. The gig was great. We gelled right away with Douglas the drummer. He is interested in playing with us but he's already in two bands so that might not happen. It was intimidating playing to an audience that included two other bands but in the end they said we sounded good. It was my first gig with my new rig, an Ampeg RB210 with an Epifani 1x12. The rig sounded awesome and was loud. I was at 1:00 o'clock on the volume with the bass volume on five. It felt very good to be playing live again. The picture was from our sound check. I had to move my amp closer to the drummer and I switched to my Yamaha bass for the gig. The E string on the jazz had a boom that I couldn't eq out. The Yamaha is active and I was able to get the E string sounding good. I suspect the cement wall behind us was affecting the sound.
