First refinish. Need some advise - mystery wood...

Yes cheap oil paint. Linseed oil based, totally compatible with the truoil. Not sure what else it would work with. I got the idea from I guy on YouTube.

I know why that spot didn't hold the color... That spot had some paint that had caked up. I decided to rub off some of the color to show more grain and that's when I found it. After the rub down the color was uniform in that spot but when I put the truoil on it pulled the color right off. I'm pretty sure the linseed oil in the paint soaked in to the wood in that spot. So the pigment laid on top all nice until I put the truoil on and it just cleaned it right off.

I had debated with myself weather or not to spray the truoil. I think maybes I would have had less color removal in the trouble spot. I wanted to rub it on so I knew how it was intended to work.

I've been pretty busy as usuall buy I did make some progress. I applied two coats of truoil tinted with the paint. So that's three total coats... I'm really surprised at how shiny it's getting, almost too shiny... Hmmmm. Not sure what to think now. I mean, it looks really good but if I would have known how shiny it would get with just a wipe on finish is pretty amazing! Part of me wishes I would have filled the grain. I was expecting to get a semi gloss finish. I'm torn now.

UPDATE!!!

Well I decided to keep applying more truoil and see where it goes...

I'm liking what I see. I have 16 total coats on it now. 8 of those were tinted with the oil paint and 8 clear.

It is very difficult to get a decent representation of the color, gloss, and grain. Especially using my cell. When I get it assembled I will get better pics, but here are a few that kinda show it off ok...

Not too shabby, huh? I want to put it back together sooooo bad but I am going to let it sit for a week. I'm thinking after that I buff it and call it done... Or give it a few more coats... I like the way the grain filled in some but not totally. The more I put on the less I will keep that effect. I think I'll stop here. Feeling like I might have got lucky on my first try. What do you guys think?
