Last night we played Gasoline Alley in Largo, FL. Pretty decent venue with a decent sound system. Supposed to be 3 bands that night and we are up last from 11:30 to close.
Made it there around 9:30 so we can check out the load in/out. The band on stage sounded really good, very clean distinct sound from each instrument. So I was pretty stoked to hear such a decent sound coming out FOH.
The second band finished up a bit early, around 10:45 to 11? and the singer introduced us as the next band. OK we start humping the gear in, they are loading gear out. Next thing we know the sound guy tells us there is a special performance from some acoustic solo artist.
Uhhhh, What??? "Yeah something last minute". Uhhh, Ok.
He tells us to get setup, Acoustic jam is only going to do 5 songs. Sound check will be right after the solo act finishes. We oblige.
Acoustic act has a following of around 20-25 emo type fans. He has a film crew, and his performance is a little strange, he talks about writing music with the ramones, and being in the misfits for like 15 years. Yet I have no idea who he is...He plays some all to common acoustic progressions, then stops and says yeah I was just trying to remember the words to a song.
ODD and so out of place to be put in between two cover bands. The other band's crowd the regular people starting leaving by the car fulls.
Our crowd of around 30-40 friends are all like *** is this crap.
By the time he is off the stage it is 12:15, we jump up sling on our instruments. and have my rig powered up and ready with a line for the sound man..... no he want his DI... straight out of my wireless. I am familiar with lot's of sound guys wanting to keep their finger on the bass guy, so let's just say I was not surprised.
We fly through sound check, amps on stage are set real low, and the monitors work surprisingly well. I can hear the FOH overspill reinforcing my low volume rig. We bust out an hour and 20 minute 17 song set. Shut down, close out, collect our door take, load out and head for the after party at a band mates house.
We listen to the CD the sound guy gave us...pretty damn good sound ..except one thing....my bottom end sounds like a vibrator.
I don't run any effects but the preamp in my Hartke rig has enough adjustment to get me a decent tone. Bottom end with punch and enough sizzle to keep me from sounding like a Dildo on half speed.
I guess I should have walked out to hear FOH. I would have noticed and requested that I hear something more than that thump/phhhhzzz noise.
The bassist for the previous band sounded bright and fat in the house mix. I don't get it
Part of me thinks it has to do with us being a new act...Maybe he has a noob setting on that channel's eq.
We tipped the house sound guy when we were done which he seemed to like a lot. He started telling us the owner loved us, and sorry about the club booking the other act. Go talk to the owner get another date.
Our self appointed band manager did mention something to the owner when he collected our money for the evening and we were assured that he would not book like that again.
Think that will really happen
