First week without cigarettes

So, I "quit" cigarettes. Horrible attitude to start a life changing decision isn't it?:hmm: ... So yeah, I've been smoking about 4 years, roughly half pack a day, maybe less. So a week ago I quit. Completely cold turkey. I've tried quitting before, but would give myself allowance to bum cigarettes and whatnot, but that always just led to me buying a pack. So this time I've been resisting the urge to even bum a smoke. So I've made it a week without one and its kinda funny because last night was like an exam for me, hung out in a smokers house and didn't have one.

I'd say my biggest inspiration for it is being able to smell cigarettes again, and man, do they stink. Being a smoker you dont smell it anymore, but when you haven't had one in awhile, that smell is a punch in the face. That is one rank smell, its rough talking close to smokers. I feel like a hypocrit, but its true.

That and women. I've heard being a smoker isn't too popular with the ladies. Yeah and health is important too. and cost... and time... and the room it takes to carry around cigarettes, lighter, back up lighter and matches... and hiding a digusting hobby from family... and the mess of ash trays... and...

Congrats! My wife and I quit smoking...................cigarettes LOL. We quit about two months ago. It's easier every day. I quit drinking beer too. That has been a couple of weeks. Between that and the smoking, we can practically make our house payment. CRAZY!

Funny thing is, my two most unhealthy habits were the two legal ones. :hiding:

Very awesome man, congrats to you as well. My strongest urges are BY FAR when drinking. I dont think I could give that up though, I like being a bit of beer snob, IPAs, stouts, porters, ales, lagers, barely wines, so so much out there. Completely more power to you though. You have my support and admiration.

Like you said though, its weird that these drugs are legal isn't it?

Go man, go! Good for you!

Try not to think of it as 'quitting' - instead think of it as 'choosing not to smoke'. One way sets you up to feel like a failure if you choose to smoke again - which usually results in a "screw it, I'm a loser cause I couldn't stick to it, so I might as well do it!" attitude. The other makes it more of an "I am in control of my choices, and I choose..." thing. Much more empowering.

Smoking is as much a psychological addiction as a physical addiction. Even more so, quite honestly. The industry has perpetuated the myth that smoking is "harder to quit then heroine" to make it's customer base think is a good reason NOT to try to stop and put themselves through the pain of withdrawl. They'd like you to believe that it is too intrusive to your everyday life to have to deal with the complications of quitting... Utter bunk.

I smoked for over 10 years (pack a day, Marlboro Reds...) I have chosen not to smoke now for over 10, no, 11 years. I will never go back.

You have the power! Go, man, go! My thoughts are with you.

... good for you , hang in there , bro .

Good luck to you. My time is quickly approaching. I told my mom Id quit by the time I was 30, which happens to coincide with a tax hike of 244% in Texas in September. I think I might give up drinking at the same time, as its one of my smoking buddies. I dont drink very much, or very often as it is, and while I enjoy my good beer, I think I can do without to help fight the urge to smoke when I drink. One sip and I want a ciggarette.

My mom is supposedly getting me some cold lazer therapy to help for my b-day.

Way to go! Keep it up (quitting)! I smoked for 20 years and quit about 15 yrs ago. Never went back to it and I'm glad!

Funny thing about quitting after such a long time...for a few months after I quit, I started having dreams that I was smoking again and got really disgusted with myself, then I'd wake up and say "Hey, wait a minute it was a dream and I HAVEN'T had one". Weird thing is that I've talked to other people who quit smoking and it seems to be a common dream, like the dreams I have about going into a college final exam and not having studied at all whenever I'm behind schedule at work...

I'm glad I never got into cigarettes. I like a pipe (tobac') once in a while, but haven't had one in a few weeks and haven't felt a craving for it (I buy low-nicotine tobacco). Woke up one morning wanting a cigarette once, and after some research discovered that my latest favorite blend (Dunhill Nightcap) was loaded with nicotine. I gave that away.

Congrats, though!
