Fishman Fluence?

So, Gizmag has an article about a new kind of pickup, the Fluence by Fishman, which they (Fishman) are claiming is the first real renovation in guitar pickups in 80 years. So far as I can tell, the idea is that the coils are in PCBs instead of being wound, and that this configuration gives greater repeatability, and thus greater standardization in the pickups.

I don't see that they have a bass pickup yet, but I find the promises interesting. Anyone who knows more about the electronics than I do have anything to say about these?

There have been several recent threads on this, if you do a search.

The biggest problem is the fact that you simply cannot get enough printed windings on the pickups to get the desired results. Further development of printing technologies may improve this, but it will never be as dense as traditional wire-wound pickups.

I just came across the Invalid Link Removed in an emailing from Island Music (LaPlata, MD). Four years later in this topic, and Fishman still does not have a bass-specific pickup in the line. They do have Invalid Link Removed, so could it be worthwhile to try a set in a humbucker-sized pickup bass, such as the Steinberger Spirits?

I’ve heard the guitar versions if tgese pickups. I only hope the bass versions sound more impressive than the guitar pickups I heard were.

Still, it’s an interesting idea that could get a lot more interesting if they continue to work in further developing it.
