Flanger or Phaser?

For those into modulation, which one do you guys use? Flanger or Phaser? Or both? If you have both, which one do you end up using more often?

I have several of both, and I use both types a ton

I generally use flanger for the quieter, more moody parts, and phaser for the heavier, more aggressive parts. But even then, there are exceptions.

I prefer flangers, currently have several. Phasers seem to work better in a thick mix, but I generally use modulation for parts where the bass stands out, so that isn't an issue for me.

The one on my board right now is the EHX Stereo Polyphase. It is one of the most versatile phasers on the market; the start/stop knobs are so important, and it also has envelope mode, square wave mode, and can be controlled by expression pedal, too.

I'm the opposite to that .

I use a Sovtek Small Stone (phaser) and a Boss BF-2 (flanger).

I post this everytime someone asks about flangers and phasers. If you can get your hands on the Musitronics Mutron Phasor II, I recommend it. It is a tank and keeps the bottom end. It's warm and versatile too. You may need to change the pots, they seem to lose their abilities after 30 years or so. As with vintage gear, sometimes you get a great one, sometimes not.

The EHX Polyphase is amazing. I am very surprised I don't hear more about it here on TB. I agree the start and stop are important and its the main reason I really like it. I am not big with playing it in the envelope mode. Not that it doesn't sound good its just not what i like. But it doesn't effect the way I can get a natural phase sound either. I am so glad my search is over for a good phaser. But I am sure I will hear someone play it in the envelope mode and make it sound good that I will use it in that mode also. For the Voodo Lab2+ I had to get a special cable because it is 24 volts.

Personally, I like using chorus effects on bass, but sometimes I like to mess around with flanger effects. sometimes, I like to combine distortion with a flanger. it kinda gives me an eddie van halen sound on bass. I've tried phaser effects and they're okay but I like flanger effects better.

ZVex Wooly Mammoth fuzz into EHX original Small Stone phaser is trooooollly scrumptious! Would like to try fuzz with flange. Anyone got any more suggestions for good flangers?

Hmm flangers ... :deep breath:

For warm, analog flanging, try the DOD FX72 on a budget, and a lot of people seem to like the Hartmann flanger (which is an original electric mistress clone) for a higher budget

For that cold, tight 80's flanger sound, you really can't beat the Boss BF-2

For ball-bearings rolling down a pipe or weird alien noises, try the new EHX Stereo Electric Mistress with the Flanger depth dimed, or an A/DA clone like the HBE Frostbite.

For jet-plane take-off flanger, you could try the Ibanez airplane flanger or an EHX flanger hoax, but you need distortion first to really hear this effect well.

Anybody have an A:B sound clip they can post of the same bass passage using just a phaser for modulation then the same passage using a flanger rather than the phaser?

That's the modulation setup I hope to have some day, in addition to my Digitech BMC.

Phasers and Flangers do overlap a bit, but can be used in totally different ways. Phasers can be much more subtle. I'm thinking a small stone nano will be the next pedal I buy unless I can hunt down a memory toy that won't break on me. Funny I bring that up because it has a modulation section on it too...

I've always preferred phasers to flangers, because to me, phasing has a more natural or organic sound. However, since discovering the Maxon FL9 Flanger, I've done an about face. This particular flanger has a very organic feel to it, though it can also get insanely metallic and swirly. I've booted my phasers in favor of the Maxon Flanger. Try one out if you can, worth every penny, and a wee bit expensive.

I still have my Maxon PT9 phaser... but seem to step for my FL9 a lot more of the times I use to feel the need for my phaser.
