Double Bass Flashlights

Made you look, didn't I?

So, I know this is going to seem really out of left field to almost all of you, but statistically I'll bet a few of you are going to reveal your true self here.

Anyone into flashlights? I'm reading a Barry Eisler novel and the black ops hero mentioned that he never is without a specific tactical flashlight "Surefire 60PX (or something)", so I looked it up to see what it looks like and it turns out that there are people really, deeply into flashlights. There are forums, like this one dedicated to people who love flashlights. Guys have picks of their flashlight quivers with reviews, technical specs, arguing with each other about batteries and who makes the best LED (not LED flashlights, but they know who actually made the LED that's in the flashlight). Price range seems to be about $35 - 300.

I had no idea...but I'm kind of intrigued at this point...and it's a really good book. All of his are.

I'm developing quite an unnatural obsession with tactical flashlights, I have to admit.

I've picked up a few bargins, just to see what the big deal was and now I always have a small LED light with me. Amazing what all you end up using them for.

..as if I wasn't geeky enough.

<sigh>

You think flashlights are bad? Check out fountain pens some time! I was learned up on music copying whilst at music school in the 80's, and we used dip pens back then. I wanted to get back into some serious "old school" copy work and fell into the pit of fountain pens. :rollno:

I shoulda got Sibelius- it would have been a LOT cheaper! :bawl:

Calligraphy is fun though- messing with different scripts is challenging and rewarding.

Hoping for some fude pens for Christmas! ;)

Oh man, you're oldschool, Damon.

This is what I'm talking about:

Several times brighter than the trusted D-Cell Maglite and an even more dangerous weapon. This one seems about middle of the road in terms of price and features...believe it or not.

(no, I'm not dropping this kind of money on flashlights)

Man, flashlights sure have changed...

This is what I'm saying! I had no idea.

I've picked up a couple of bargins in the high power, compact LED light family and they are really useful for walking the dog, finding things in my bass bag back stage, etc. Fun little side obsession for a little while, but there are people who for reasons that I still don't understand doing with flashlights what we do with string combinations, preamps and pickups. Making stuff, modifying stuff, ordering quirky little things from Europe and Asia that no one has actually seen, spending piles of dough and living on forums where they talk about it and slap down noobs with "do a search!"

Who knew?

Just a note that those CR123 batteries are really expensive, but they are cool. If you don't need the small size, there are some LED flashlights that use D batteries that work well, but don't have that stealth factor.

123's, really? The last time I bought a 12 pack it was only a few bucks more than what I pay for quality 9V's. The 123's last long in my experience as well. Maybe they've gone up in price, I'll have to look around.

Lots of interests in the world, including our low end beliefs we share.

I use flashlights when setting up on stage, helps enlightened a shadowy world behind the amp, and to find buttons on my pedal board adjusting to the room. Use LED now, but with old batteries, as they are otherwise too bright .

They appear to be fairly expensive if you go into a camera shop and buy a 2 pack. A box of a dozen is per battery no more than alkalines and they last a lot longer.

The real geeks use rechargables, though, even if they have to send their $100 flashlight to a machine shop to change the bore...seriously.
