Ok, here’s yet another “what strings” thread.
I’m thinking of changing the strings on my Squier VM Precision Bass TB that has been converted to fretless. It’s currently strung with Chromes, 45-100 IIRC. They’ve been on it since mid 2020, so not particularly old, but I’m noticing a really considerable lack of definition on the E string, especially when I’m plucking up on the neck. It’s almost like a vacuum sucked out the note, and all I’m left with is the undertones. The rest of the strings still sound great, IMO.
If I’m going to change one, I’m going to change the whole set, so I’m looking for recommendations. I could use chromes again, but that’s no fun as I’ve already had those, and I want to explore something new. Prior to the chromes, I’ve had EB group flats (worked great for years, but were a touch darker than I’d care to return to), fender 9050L (too bright & didn’t fit the character of the bass), and EB slinky rounds (I want to keep this bass w/ flats now).
Some further considerations:
What I’m considering -
I know there’s no magic perfect set, so it’s very subjective. Just wonder what folks would suggest give the above. I’ve attached videos of this bass for refer on how it’s sounded in the past.

Some further considerations:
- I don’t like high tension strings, but I do like my action as low as possible without buzzing when played with a medium touch (finger style). The 45-100 sets I’ve tried seem to be a good tension.
- Even string to string volume and tension is important to me.
- This is a string-through-body bass, so the strings need to able to handle that. I’ll say this, though; it hasn’t been an issue with any of the aforementioned sets…unless that’s why my E string is dead.
What I’m considering -
- TI jazz flats: cuz I hear they’re awesome.
- Dunlop flats: just curious about them.
- LaBella low tension: because I hear DTFs are bridge cables.
- Dogal flats: because they seem neat
- Cobalt flats: I have a set on my FL foundation, and like them…but not sure about the string through aspect.
- Others???
