Large inner core on small tuning post !!!!
Silks appear quite a bit smaller. This is what I had and it works, got almost 4 turns on the E (there are acrylic bushings in the headstock for the 3/8” tuners. Old tuners wouldn’t keep tune on the La Bella’s. The new tuners are Graph Tech Ratios) . New bridge and EMG actives in it sounds real woody like an upright. I’m happy!

I'm now using my last set of pre 2010 Fender 9050L's, the ones that Fender wound in Mexico with no green silk at the headstock end.

I still can't find another flat wound set that compare with these!
- If as I suspect you've already tried and flagged GHS Precision Flats, and
- assuming Pyramid Gold flats cannot be identical by virtue of their being chrome nickel, and
- ditto for the round-core DR Legends (or can they?)

I'd turn to experimenting with lesser-known brands, even cheap ones:
- Olympia FLS 4B-45100 or -4095
- Adagio Pro FLBA45
- Harley Benton HQS Bass 45-100 Flatwound
- Elites Detroit Flats
- Webstrings Detroit Bass Flatwound
- Picato 766LFW or MFW (tried as I have, I still haven't been able to ascertain if they even exist anymore though: perhaps they're just clearing out inventory)

I posted here in April saying that I didn’t love the DR Legend flats I had just installed on my SBMM Ray5. They didn’t work well on that bass. I have since moved the EADG strings from that set to my Ibanez AEB5E acoustic bass and I intend to keep them there for a very long time. They work incredibly well on the acoustic bass.

A few weeks ago I purchased a set of Ernie Ball Cobalt Slinky flats for my Ray5. These strings really are the bees knees on this bass. The B has excellent tension and the rest of the set feels the perfect amount of loose-ish. They are still just a little bit sticky in some places but I know that will go away with time. I’ve actually had Cobalt Slinky flats on this bass before and I can’t remember why I took them off.

That now makes two of my three basses equipped with flats. If you had told me I’d be back to flats on the majority of my basses at the beginning of the year I would have said no way.

Here I am! Three basses, all with LB LTF's. Wouldn't have anything else because I am Old School Soul. Do I get a number?

OP last seen 14 years ago.

EB Group IV flats on my 79 StingRay, and custom length .040 - .100 Pyramid Gold flats on my Chowny CHB-1 semi-hollowbody. Both sets are staying right where they are.

Lifelong roundwound user here, but recently have watched a bunch of YT videos about P-bass and flatwounds. I have a Jazz with roundwounds, so I want something totally different. Local guitar shop doesn't carry flatwounds!

Where should I start? I do see on Sweetwater that these tend to cost more than roundwounds.

  • Fender Player+ 4-string PJ bass
  • Typically play 1/2 step down, alt-rock.

Really just looking to experiment with sound for recording and get a classic P-bass vibe. Any help is much appreciated!

Don't know about the step down stuff but you can't get much more classic P-bass vibe than LB DTFs.
