I string D'Addario Chromes through the body of my 51ri P bass, it's the only option with the stock bridge. They sound and feel great, and they are bright with the tone full open, and real fat if you roll the tone off.
yeah, chromes are like the only flat string you can get a passable slap sound out of, but that will die out eventually. But flats aren't really good for slapping... i've been there.
I have a really old set of Fender flats that you can get a '70's Larry Graham slap and pop sound out of. The E string is a bit boomy, but they actually sound pretty good when slapped.
