He is very talented ... but bass players who constantly slap are like they have terrets syndrome ... it gets unpleasant to listen to.

Flea is awesome. I have been listening to a lot of RHCP recently and he has really awesome bass lines. Give It Away, Breaking The Girl, Scar Tissue, All Around The World... Those bass lines are excellent! I've never heard him solo before, but he is still awesome anyway. And I'm sure his solos are good too.

What I really meant was that Fleas playing on all the Chili Peppers songs has appeal to millions of listeners, and I realize that Flea is profoundly grateful to all his fans and a very humble individual. That in itself makes him great.

I like Flea, don't get me wrong, but the only thing his popularity has to do with my appreciation for him is to think that he makes people want to pick up a bass instead of the somewhat-default choice of picking up a guitar.

Also, I really don't think that Flea would say something like "I sold millions so that means I'm good". I would really be disappointed if he did, actually. That's looking at music as a popularity contest, and as I said, I don't think it should be a contest at all.

Well he might not be the greatest bassist alive, but he gave lots of people a brand new idea of what a bass player is capable of (I'm talking bout the masses).
Besides, I'm not a great player but I'v always appreciated his work. But, most of all I must admit he's really humble, he kinda understimate himself. He's a selftaught bassist and he's earned lots of money but still use his time off to improve. I remember him saying that a certain point of his longtime career he realized he wasn't really good at pausing, so he did a whole RHCP Album using pauses as never before, he said that he sometimes tended to do way too much but eversince then he's learnt to do less! SO INSPIRING FOR CRAPPY BASSISTS LIKE ME :crying:

Squire, on the other hand probably has more chops and is super talented, but Yes functioned quite well without him because the overall level of musicianship in Yes is so high.

Well of course, he was a founding member, same goes for Anthony if the group lost either of em.

Everyone isn't built for or has the desire to be a "solo artist". That doesn't make you any less of a bassist in my eyes. In fact most of the best bassists I've heard are not "solo artists". Flea isn't my favorite by far but to be fair the dude can play. I have a video from Stanley Clarke with about 6 guest bassists (Flea being one of them) and he held is own. His stock went up several points in my book. It's always funny to see guys bash multi award winning millionaire musicians from their basements or bedrooms.
