"Flea" Tone

I would say first get your eq something like this: a decent amount of lows, not much lower mid, tons of higher mid and highs.
also i think the key to flea playing is a combination of low action (on the bass itself) and aggreesive finger style. on the intro to "around the world" or in the bridge of "suck my kiss" he's really banging away at the d and g strings.

Also, i'm not sure what kind of bass your playing but i would suggest playing closer to the bridge with the bridge pickup turned up and the neck pickup turned down.

good luck.

Flea still uses the 800RB and has his GK cabs gutted and replaces them with Mesa guts.
Also, he is heavy on bi-amping with the high end cab's tweeter cranked

If you were trying to get a rise out of me...it worked. Flea uses multiple 2001RB and RBH cabinets. Stop spreading stupid rumors.

News to me, I agree with Brian. I thought he was currently using the 2001RBs and RBH cabs (1 x 410 + 1 x 115 per head).

Though back in the day he used an 800RB and Mesa/Boogie Diesel cabs as his smaller rig if what I've been told here before is correct :)

often times what player's promote...isn't actually what you hear them through.

True. Live you are hearing them through the Sound Reinforcement signal chain. On recordings you are hearing them through the tracking and mastering signal chains. Sometimes neither of those bears much resemblance to what is on stage, and sometimes that's actually for good reason.

That's right. He's been using 2001RB's and RBH 1x15 and 4x10 cabs (three each). That's what he used when I saw them on the last tour and they were miked. The sound you hear is from those amps. He also uses those amps/cabs to record.
He used 800RB's and Mesa 2x15 and 2x10 cabs (three each) all thru the 90's. I think he switched to prototype 2001RB heads around 2000 for the Californication tour and switched to GK RBH cabs later, I believe for the By The Way tour.
I liked the sound of his Mesa cabs better.
