Flite Cabs... do tell about your experience

I am interested to hear about your experiences with Flite cabs. I am very close to ordering an Flite 115M (without the 15 but with the midrange speaker). I'll be putting in a 4 ohm Eminence kappa pro lf.

I know the enclosure is composed of some sort of hardened foam or something.

My primary question is about tone. Given that the enclosure walls are not constructed of wood and will no doubt have more give/flexibility how will that effect the tone?

Have you played thru a flite cab? What did you think of it?

I've owned a number of Flite cabs, from the original cabs when it was owned by Kurt Meyer to the present. They are light weight, they sound ok, but don't expect anything hifi. Good for low to medium volume gigs. I recommend the standard 15 with the Kappa speaker(not the pro). Those cabs actually sound worse with the pro series. I've had the 115M and the 115 and I prefer the 115 with the Kappa.

I've played out of a number of the older Flites. When they came out all those years ago, they were really the only lightweight cab in the industry. They were used by lot's of DB guys. I didn't like them much.... the lightweight cabs really vibrated at volume... I remember we all used foam between the cab and the heads, etc. Rather midrange sounding.

Unless they are greatly improved, IMO they are not in the same league as the many lightweight alternatives out there now (EpifaniUL, EA NL210, Accugroove, etc.)

The construction material has much improved, but when I recieved the latest version of the 115 it was also midrangey like the old ones. It was just by chance that I discovered how much better they sounded with the Kappa's because a friend had one laying around that I stuck in it. It came from Flite with a Delta and when I looked up the specs on that speaker it was not designed for a box that small, hence it sounded bad. I get the impression there is not a lot of speaker design know-how that goes into building these cabs. I really like dealing with Kurt when he had it.

In what way was the regular Kappa more favourable than the pro?

Why did you prefer the 115 over the 115M. My understanding is that the 5" midrange speaker allows it to cut thru better.

When you guys say it sounds midrangey is that the low mids or mid mids? The lows arent very present then?

As I said, I don't think there is alot of design know-how in these cabs. To be honest, none of them sound great. The 115M is a very strange sounding cab. I think it is just by chance that the smaller 115 sounds decent with the Kappa. It is my opinion that each box is built to whatever size will accomodate the components with no consideration as to what components are used in the design. Every box has the same plastic port, no matter how big it is. Any particular reason you want the Flites? I'm with Ken in that there are A LOT better options in the light cab category these days.
