Flying Drones are becoming a life threatening problem here in California.

Now there's a headline in this morning's news about a near-miss between a Delta airliner and a drone near JFK airport.

The thing that's most troubling about this one, I think, is that the drone operator was clearly in violation of a half-dozen different laws, so it's not a matter of waiting for the right legislation to be put into place. Instead, it's a reminder that there will always be idiots, and it's just a matter of time before one causes a real catastrophe.

I read where this drone pilot was within 100 feet of the Delta jet.

He/she could face federal charges....assuming you can find the person.


Edit: also a report of a JetBlue flight had a drone encounter a couple hours prior to the Delta flight at JFK.

Sorry if it's bad form to quote my own previous post, but now they're saying there were TWO such incidents on Friday near JFK, a couple of hours apart, which might or might not be related.

Another new twist is that some commentators have pointed out that drones could be 3-D printed in such a way as to operate as explosives, so there is a potential terrorism angle to the problem as well. As if it weren't a big enough problem already....

It is also worth noting that the drone was quite a bit closer to the firemen than most people would infer from the video. It has a quite wide fish-eye lens, which "zooms" back from the center of field in order to pull in light from further outside the center.

I was talking with some friends about stuff like this last week, and one of them mentioned that there's a video on Youtube, posted by some goofy idiot who had put a pistol on his drone. And figured out how to shoot the thing, too. If there is a God, the BATF already has him locked up, but next time..? Sometimes I think that maybe Ned Lud was right...:rollno:

As I said back in post #138, accidents such as these (I presume it was an accident) are one of my biggest worries about these things, and I fear that we're going to start hearing about occurrences like this one on a regular basis. And frankly, I just can't see what the solution is going to be: As long as these things are flying around there are going to be failures and accidents; as long as there is gravity these failures and accidents are going to result in things falling to the ground; and as long as people and cars are on the ground, they are going to be hit by the falling things.

Before you start throwing your rights out the window and want even more legislation, consider all the facts first. If it were illegal to fly a drone over an airport (which it is within 5 miles of an airport) then that will not stop drones from flying over airports. More laws does not equal less problems and laws do not make illegal activity disappear.

For instance: It is illegal to fly a drone over an airport, military base, and a U.S. National Park. Wait, what? So I can't fly a drone up high in Yosemeti and take pictures? Nope. Doesn't seem fair does it? For us law abiding citizens, there should be some leniency. That is why it takes a while for laws to be passed.

Besides, I figure all drones will be banned in CA. soon because they cause cancer:eyebrow:

The scenerio that scares me the most, is if I strapped explosives to several at once and set GPS waypoints to various locations. However; there is no law now, nor ever will be to prevent anyone from doing this. It will simply be "illegal"

Well, sure.... but isn't that true of pretty much every law in existence? And should we therefore not bother to have any laws at all?

Pretty alarming news out of the NYC tri-state area today. There were reports of a drone in the airspace around Newark Airport, along with audio of the Newark tower on the radio with approaching flights warning them of the danger.

I think this scenario is one of the more frightening ones regarding drones. If an airliner gets damaged on takeoff or on approach? There's going to be hell to pay.

I saw one flying around one time while I was driving and I thought to myself, well even if it didn't hit anything its still very distracting to see something unusual flying around knowing that it's spying on you. I could see somebody getting distracted and crashing their car because of it.

as usual, it will take someone getting killed or worst, lots of people dying in a senseless tragedy before anything is done in earnest. All it takes is one moron or a bad guy with an agenda to create a tragedy and then the politicians will be coming out of the woodwork spouting things like " Im outraged" or " we need to find out who knew what and when" you get the picture, meanwhile the damage has already been done.

Quite frankly I think these things should have had tighter restrictions before they ever hit the market but its too late for that now.
