Foam mute

Can somebody recommend me a good cheap foam material to put under my strings? I found air conditioning weatherstrip online. Will that work? Thanks.

Yes. I use the adhesive backed weather stripping and stick two pieces together back to back.

I use a piece of grey foam that came in a hard drive box. Most computer parts boxes have
that same foam...not too dense, not too soft...just right. you can cut it easily for a nice custom
fit too.

You need to use something that's not too stiff and lifts the strings a bit from the saddles causing intonation problems. I ran into this issue using an off cut of Sonic Barrier acoustic dampening foam. It was too dense and stiff. Great stuff to line your bass cabs. Bad for a foam mute.

Notice the grey foam under the strings just ahead of the bridge of Don Was's custom shop Fender Precision. He never talks about it. It's just there. Probably some of that computer foam that Biggbass was talking about.

I don't even know where the foam pieces I have came from, just found them in my garage and cut them into strips.
I don't really use them for rock / metal stuff, only for blues, funk, soul, stuff like that.

That's exactly what I do, and it works well.
Or, on a Fender or Fender style bass, you can stick one piece on the underside of a bridge cover.

I've been pleased with a product called "Mufler". Provides the damping without lifting the strings.

I just ordered the ashtray set for my p. pretty hyped! I got the individual pickup cover for my other precision. So hopefully if this stuff works I don't have to take it out like my old mutes.

Lol. I have this thin neoprene beer cozy in the shape of a largemouth bass that I use. Just roll it up and slide it under. Not too stiff and not to soft. Works good to keep my beer cold when I'm not muting every note too! Seriously, it sounds great.
