Foam mute

Simple, if you can't play the line while palm muting, then use the material many have suggested for muting strings.

Well yes :) But what I meant was, people tend to suggest palm muting instead of using foam as a technique that replaces using foam, but it just can't. It's physically impossible...well most people. I'm sure some people can tear it up with their thumb and index/middle finger.
 
I like the super-cheap bag of sponges from Harbor Freight. They are very low density, which makes the muting a little more subtle. I cut a strip about an inch wide and place it right next to the bridge.
