I love Tom Kennedys demo of the Emp 5 fretless standard. It made my mouse go over to the "deposit" button on your website but I stopped myself somehow. That wood combo is killer!
I was curious and not sure if this is mentioned elsewhere (perhaps I missed it), but where is the pickup placement on the standard fretless basses? Also, I was curious if that demo was with steel or nickel Fodera strings just so I know what I'm hearing.

Careful - it could ruin you for other basses. I've gotten to the point where I will add instruments but then pare back down because 90% of the time I want to play the YYD. I'm keeping my Rob Allen because it is a different beast as well as my FrankenFoderaFretless but am having a tough time convincing myself to keep anything beyond that. Just trying to figure out the "right" 5-string solution for me but I can't figure out the variables. I keep going back and forth on string spacing and nut width - some days wider feels better, other days narrow.
By contrast the YYD just feels right every time I pick it up. I just count myself lucky and will play the snot out of it.

Todd, I listened to your ted talk, and one thing that jumped out at me was how good your YYD sounds! Those chords were so clear. The sum total of the bass must hit some sweet spot. It made me wonder of the deluxe

Thanks, and yes, that bass just works for me. While I latched onto the E-C thing, over time I found that I could get most of the chord voicings I needed on the YYD, and I'll never be a virtuoso chord/solo guy so I've moved away from the C-string. Was a good set of experiments though - opened my eyes to different sonic spaces.
Nice! Any chance we can get a super close up of were the neck meets the non cut upper "horn"? Or even just a comment on how seamless it is?

Thanks for the kind words. The pickups for the E5FS are in 70's position and the strings are our SS 45-125 set.

Finally I got around to recording a demo of my new bass showcasing the mike pope sliding pickup tray. I've had this bass for about two months and love everything about it. The guys at Fodera nailed every little detail I asked them for; it feels right, sounds right, looks right, and functions perfectly, well worth every penny. Take a look at the demo, let me know if I'm crazy of if this sliding pickup makes a HUGE difference in tone. Everything is set flat going into a gkmb800 into an audiokinesis tc112 with a Sony PCM-d50 about 20in from the cab. This demo is all about the sliding pickup and three way toggle, so not really a full demo of this bass. Enjoy
