No problem at all. I think all of us can get tired of our current "sound", and start looking for something a little different. That's why many of us have multiple instruments, often in widely different configurations. I'm mostly a p-bass guy, but I sometimes walk out the door with something different. I'm not particularly a Jazz guy, but lately I've been enjoying burpy sound of my old Yamaha BBG5 with TI flats.

:laugh: IDK! what would your mom say?

i've stayed "married" to rounds for almost 50 years...my infrequent dalliances with flats "meant nothing" --- it was thrill-seeking behavior: never any true love involved --- and i always went home to the one(s) who never let me down. :D

I was married to my DB for a long time, and kept rounds on my BG because that is what you are supposed to do. It took me a long time to realize that I would actually enjoy playing my BG a lot more with flats. Heck, now I even got flat jazz strings on my acoustic guitar.

I think this is the therapy thread I have been looking for. I wanted a bit more thump out of my Stingray 4 and put on a set of EB Cobalt Flats and LOVE them...but having trouble as it just feels like it should be wrong. Flats fit perfectly with the band I am playing in, and even slapping on a couple of 70s songs sounds great. Just have this terrible voice in my head telling me I should never do this on a Stingray.

I've been rounds for over 20 years. Checked some flats out… "I promise honey. They meant nothin to me"… months later I try some others… "I swear! It meant nothing!"… months later "ok, I know I sounded like a broken record in the past, but I've changed. Isn't there a way I can have you both?"

4 basses. 2 with flats, and 2 with rounds. I've got a lot of love to give around.

I'm married to rounds. I have one bass where I'm having an affair with Pressurewounds - Its a very bright bass with rounds, and that combo seems to work in that one situation. I think Pressurewounds are the end of the road for me.

I have had coffee with flats (regular La Bellas), but it didn't get past that. The strings literally came off the bass within a couple of hours. I have a set of Low Tension Flats in my string pile, just in case I want to try again, but I'm pretty sure I know where that will end up.

I do play fretless, and there rounds are absolutely crucial to me - the mwah from a good set of rounds is why I persist playing fretless.

I had played bass for about 15 years before owning a set of flats. After that, WHOA!, I've got to put flats on everything!

Yeah, that lasted maybe a year or two. I do legitimately like the sound of flats, but it's not the only sound I want. In fact, right now, I don't have any real flats installed at all: two basses with (different) roundwounds, one with half-rounds, and one with tapewound. No guarantee it will all stay that way, but variety is nice.

I like flats with a pick, and rounds for fingers. All three of my basses have flats on them right now, though. As soon as I'm decisive enough to identify the one I'm not gigging, rounds will go back on.

I don't dislike flats with fingers; I just find that rounds give me a little more. I do dislike rounds with a pick. I miss the click, and a pick on rounds sounds like a big mess to me.

But I'm old, and I'm originally a guitar player. My roundwound jams are mostly heard in the privacy of my bedroom. My legions of fans hear flats.
