I love these conversations.

I remember in a college course I had, the instructor was telling us about a guy who was inspired by the Faust story and decided to tell everyone that he too sold his soul to the devil so that he could play piano. He was an amazing piano player too....and everyone would come to his show to see the man who sold his soul to play piano...

Needless to say, it sold tickets.

I used to put Maynard up on a pedestal, but now that I'm off the drugs I think he's just performing and composing how he sees and it's these other people who hear it while they're dropping acid that create his Faust story, so to speak.

That is a really interesting post. Brings up some interesting thoughts about the gulf between the performers, their fans, what the artist is trying to articulate, and what actually registers inside of people...
