To your first statement, i would argue that the loose labeled genres of indie, emo, and *core have at least evolved somewhat. Earth bros were doing almost 20 years ago what bands like Sunn are doing now.

Your second statement is just silly assumptions.

I'll point out again my agreement with Deluge that the main thing you need is creativity... not necessarily a wall of amps or pedals.

i used the ehx metal muff today, borrowed it from my guitarist, who never uses it. He might not get it back, especially i take and fix the power supply problem with it. Dirty nasty distortion

Three years is relatively recently, though. The problem with Doom specifically is that since its so stupidly easy to reinvent the wheel (via lots of speaker area, a muff based fuzz, and whole notes) that the "creativity" answer is massively more important than the pedals, amps, etc.

s'all good man. I agree wholeheartedly with the 'outside the box thing'. The problem is, everything these days gets put in boxes.

I apologize... living in MD, like, doom's birth place (seriously, i see Wino monthly, Earthride is a 'local' band, and dudes from Pentagram show up at local shows all the time too)... every week i see new doom and drone bands that do the same thing. But hey, it makes that band that does it a little bit differently stand out way more.

So i also agree, that while having a literal wall of amps is sweet... volume doesn't compensate for creativity.

Honestly, just find a drummer. Some of the more interesting doom bands ive seen lately have been two-pieces. Both bass/drum and guitar/drum.

It should be easier to find just a drummer than a whole band...

Very true Deluge. Actually When I did play metal/doom/what-ever more I didn't use FX, and I used the same amp I did for blues, pop, rock gigs. I Use more dirt in my Rock/pop/indie/what-ever-you-want-to-label-it band then I ever did with the heavy stuff... But.... you know... fuzz.... it's so cool...

this is a very good point, a lot of heavy bassists use very clean tone and let the guitars do all the grindings...effects would just mud the sound up even more, with no effects they can provide a basis for tone.

this is, of course, assuming there's a guitarist involved

Agreed on all counts, although my Supercollider sees much less action now that I'm not tuned down two steps. The 250 is supplying all my gain-y needs these days.

Ok I'm going to say something [everyone groans]

I think in the end you have to follow your own muse [no not that bad band] and play what you want the hear not what you think other might want to hear. If all you hear in your head is iron man slowed wayyy down [] then go for it. When I got back into this stuff a few years back I thought I'd try to play more "doomy" stuff... but it all sounded like me trying to sound like boris and sunn... Thing is I don't play like that or write like that, I'm not saying that the stuff I write isn't "doomy" [click on purple disease in sig if you actually want to hear... most of those songs are almost ten years old...] in it's own way but it is what it is and I am whats I am... In the end I think the trying helped put things in a clearer focus and got me to look at why I stared playing in the first place and what I want to say now...

I am working mainly off your rig as of now
I would agree with Din of Win 15's are a great and inexpensive way to start and instead of buying expensive upgrades you can choose to stack them up
If your focus right now is pedals I would say when you go to test one bring your bass.
If you don't have anyone to play with live try doing some home recording you can sound HUGE close micing a combo and then layer and layer and reverb
Even though Sunn may use a "*********" fuzz, you at the present time do not own amps similar to theirs so make sure the pedal sounds the way you want with your amp

and he could have spent 1/3 of that by
getting a Peavey Mark III bass head $100-150
and a Peavey 2x15 $100-150

ask questions then ask more
it's trial and error and with the interwebs you can make less mistakes
but if you can find a fender BXR 300 combo
you will get alot for a little
(and you don't have to buy a trailer)

Please help me to understand which effects and pedals i should invest in.

I also enjoy 60's-80's rock (Blue Oyster Cult, REO Speedwagon), what do i need to do for that style?

I mainly focus on metal though, all forms but specifically drone/doom/funeral.

First off,

Welcome to the wonderful world of bass

Your first investment should be a Fuzz pedal if you are going to go down the heavy route. Now unless you have some cash to burn, you will want to go with one or two pedals at a time and invest in more effects as your playing progresses. As a current pedal addict I can tell you that I have sold and traded around a 1000 USD in pedals in the last year alone same with this year but I have been lucky enough to break even =D.

The Big Muff is one most frequently copied and reproduced pedals out there, I would start with a clone or a Big Muff and work from there.

Some good entry level fuzzes that I have had or played that I liked in one form of another are.

Devi Ever - Hyperion, Aniemia or Torns Peaker. Big Muff Bass Pi, Little Big Muff, And even if they are out of production the Russian Big muff is easy to find and can be modded with some cool options.

So take your time and enjoy your music no matter what anyone has to say about it =D

Chorus is great. You can pick up the Danelectro Cool Cat chorus or a Boss CEB-3/CE-5 for less than $50.

Some slight delay also helps a ton with making the sound fuller. There's a ton of Delays out there with a vast price range... do a little searching to find the best for you.

Personally i use both an Akai Headrush E2 and a Boss DD-6. I love the boss delays. Other delays in the cheaper range, check out delays from MXR (Carbon Copy), EHX (Memory Boy, Memory Toy), and Guyatone (forgot the delay model name). If you want a step up... i reccomend the EHX Memory Man and Memory Man w/Hazarai, Boss DD-20, Line 6 DL-4, and the aformentioned Akai Headrush.

I strongly recommend the guyatone md3 but that gives you exactly what you give it some people really like the analog delays because it lowers the amount of treble on the repeats but you have to be careful that when heavily distorted your sound doesn't go from drone to mud.
