For Drone and Doom Metal?

For Doom standard kit is a type of Big Muff Pi. There are 100s of threads on Muff variants. And many opinions, all I will say on this here is stay away from the Bass Big Muff [I don't like how it sounds] and a NYC as it's lows arn't as boomy as one would want for everything.

Now My suggestion:FuzzHugger(fx) Great Wall, it is SO doomy and chewy and BIG and FUZZY!

This is how most people go for drone but what happens with this approach is you end up with wet fart which doesn't really have much low end and gets completely dominated by guitar.

The way sunn do bass live is get as much power and cabs as possible so they can really push big clean low end then use a rat ( rats don't clip low frequencys anywhere near as much as a muff does) or pedal with similar gain structure so the low end stays clean and brutal. Clean blends are always a big help aswell.

I agree clean blends are great....

Depends on the muff... old sovteks have more lows then most dirt pedals out there... And guess what pedal I have seen in picks of sunn((O))) for the bassist....? A old green sovtek...

I have one and I can't use the thing with my rig because the lows are uncontrollable in less I cut lows on my amp.

Oh! YOU DO NOT GET DOMINATED BY THE GUITAR IF YOUR AMPS ARE LOUDER!!! :D

You need old/vintage bass with agressive tone (P-bass, Gibson Ripper, Peavey T-40, Rick)
You vintage tube amp (Ampeg SVT-VR)
You need EHX Russian Big Muff, Boss OC-2, EHX BMS and few more fuzz/synth boxes.

Dont forget to stand closer to amp and face it when you turn on fuzz ;)

they've always used rats when i've seen them!

making a bad sound louder to be heard mix isn't always a great idea.

AND! For the record I didn't suggest a muff I just said that is what everyone else seems to do. And suggested pedal pedal to check out that is kind of a anti-muff.

When I played really heavy stuff alot awhile back [as I said before in the thread] I didn't use FX I just used a SVT through a 600watt 2X12 and a 1X18:). Now I use a Mesa 400+ with the same cabs, but use a supper fuzz clone that has a blend for most of my dirt sounds.

True dat. I think Down are bringing a sharper focus onto Southern Doom stuff like Crowbar and Eyehate God. From these bands you can clearly get into Sleep, and then suddenly you are in Doom country. Crowbar have some slick videos and production, and certainly served as my gateway into Doom, and a few other people I know.


As for a good Drone sound, I really like the new Earth albums. I think for Drone to persist it has to go other places, and I like the desert landscapes of the new Earth stuff. Clean tones can sound just as massive as dirty ones, but the trick with bass is to get a good sustaining heavy sound that doesn't clip too much and become too messy.

OP's post states he only has a 20 watt Behringer amp, so he is going to be running the legs off that thing if he uses any pedals really. 20 Watt bass amps do not favour down tuning, and unless they have very aggressive compressors (like the Orange stuff) then their speakers get quite nasty pretty quickly when any distortion is added to the equation. Basically OP needs to find some vintage overlooked valve amp, or a modern clone or something.

Whenever I get the urge to get doom-y, I bust out the Zebrabird with some fresh Roto 66s downtuned to C#, turn my Fuzz Face all the way up, crank my Bassman 300 Channel two gain, and whip out some Sleep riffs.

But yeah, you'll need some big speakers and big power. Tubes or old SS seems to work, think SVTs, Sunn (either the 60s Tube amps or later solid state Concerts and Coliseums or a Model T), maybe some Acoustic stuff, Matamp/Orange/Electric Amps. My personal speaker size of choice is 15", but 12"and 18", (and some 10" cabs like the Ampeg 410 HLF) do quite nicely too. Then Fuzzes........SO MANY FUZZES!


But seriously, big-ass amps first, fuzzes later.
