Forearm contour options

Picked up my first bass, a Yamaha trbx504. Having a little trouble getting comfortable with the area that my forearm / wrist interacts with. It is contoured, but still a lot thicker than I'm used to compared to my guitar (a Yamaha pac311, which has a pretty noticeable forearm slope).

Is this just a lack of familiarity / poor technique / wrong strap height thing? Anything else I should consider while I'm still in the return window?

Only other basses I've handled are a bb234 and an ibanez gsr200. At least in the store I didn't notice a huge difference on contour, but didn't like them as much for other reasons (weight and perceived build quality respectively).
