fractured knuckle? ****pics up*****

Last night, while attempting to charley horse a friend, I accidently smashed my fist into the steel handle of an kitchen cabinet. Really hard, too.

Now my middle knuckle on my right hand is about 2-3 times its' regular size, can move my finger about half its' usual motion before it really hurts. Can't make a fist either. If I stretch my finger out straight, it hurts the top of my hand, up to my wrist.

I have a gig on thursday....help!

Ice it. You might want to see a doctor, although I don't think there's much you can do in terms of splints for a knuckle like that. If it is broken, you will need to take it easy with that hand for a while.

The only real way to tell if it is fractured is to get an X-ray. I doubt it would be, because the force needed to actually fracture a knuckle is quite high, and would likely damage more than just the knuckle. Especially with the cartilage in the knuckle, it actually has more padding to impact. It wouldn't hurt to have it looked at, because you obviously injured it pretty bad.

Thanks for the input guys, I really appreciate it.

I'll go in sometime in the next few days, to see what it is. It's swelling more towards my wrist now...that can't be good.

You may have injured something down the line. Take some Aleve (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory), and ice it. Have a doc look at it, because you may have dislocated something in your hand.

I did something similar and broke the bone that runs from the knuckle back toward the wrist. Because I delayed seeing a Dr about it (waited 5 days for the swelling and pain to go away .. they didn't) there were limited options for trying to fix it.

I had the fracture reduced (which consisted of two orderlies playing tug of war with my finger and elbow .... OWWW!!!) and my hand and wrist was immobilised in plaster but the bone was not set properly. This has resulted in me having a slightly shorter finger on my right hand than it should be. I should have insisted on orthopedic surgery to pin the bone and make sure it was set properly .... the healing time would have been similar and the results would have been much better.

Anyway .... this is potentially an injury that will have long term repercussions on your bass playing!! Get to a Dr sooner rather than later and get it sorted ASAP. In the meantime, ice it to reduce swelling. Do what the Dr tells you to do ... even if it means missing out on a gig or two ...... your short-term bass playing may need to suffer in order to protect your long-term bass playing potential.

Of course, it may be a less serious injury that will just leave you sore for a while, however, you need to find out and x-rays and a thorough medical exam are the best ways to find out .... and a Dr can prescribe meds that can ease the discomfort and swelling.

After icing it regularly throughout the day, the swelling has gone down just a slight amount. Although I have much more range of motion if I bend my finger inwards than I did before, but it hurts more to straighten it out than it did before. something doesn't feel right. Can't wait ti'll morning so that I can get it checked out. I also got nice hit in then left shoulder today (previously broken collarbone a few years back) and now it feels as if it's grinding against something.

o the joy

You could go to the ER...

I hope you have health insurance.

I don't think it's quite serious enough for a trip to the ER, although I don't believe it would cost anything since I live in Canada.

I'll just go to the clinic tommorow, if it still bugs me when I get up.

Well, I hope they get it figured out!

I'm glad I have health insurance here. I just got strep for the second time this year, and it cost me 37 dollars to get checked, get a scrip, and everything.
