Hey, I remember going to this place called Bob's Country Bunker to see a band called the Good Ol' Boys but was soon disappointed when I saw a Boy George cover band playing instead.

To me, trying to pass a good, noted builder's work off as your own is like taking a Fender MIA and putting a Squier logo on it.
Bass is the same regardless of the moniker, but why would you perform resale suicide???

The weird thing was that he probably could have raised more money if he'd used Tom's name. More than one person has contacted me trying to buy it. Anyway I'm not uptight about it & an apology was offered & accepted. The bass itself is quite enjoyable & even though it was #4 in Tom's long line of accomplishments it is quite a nice bass. I didn't really need a 4 string fretless, I just chipped in to help a good cause. I certainly didn't expect to be involved in anything like this but it turned out ok in the end.

Hi.

Good to hear that the issue was resolved.

On topic, strangely enough the only complete bass I ever sold back in the late 80's popped up two times a year apart on a local on-line auction site.

The first seller did say that the instument was built by an unknown instrument builder, but the second one claimed that he made it.

On the first one I did post some background info about the instrument, on the second I just posted a smiley. Neither one did contact me back .

How did I know it was mine? Well it's not like it's the most popular shape around:

He didn't really have anything to gain by claiming it as his own, and as others have pointed out, he could have made more money had he used tom's name. So the excuse holds up for me. It might be different if the seller had a bass building/repairing business. Glad to see everyone is happy in the end.

I had an incident a few years back where a Luthier in Venezuela posted a picture of one of my Scroll Basses on his web site, claiming that he had built it, and this model was available on order. One of my fans hammered him, and he eventually admitted that he didn't actually build that exact bass....and didn't even own it. He just had some pictures. But if you placed an order, he could build one just like it! And just as good! Uh huh.

Reminds me of a sad but funny story told by my son's high school shop teacher. A mother at their back-to-school night came up to him and was so happy because her son who had been in trouble with the police and drugs had finally found something he was good at. He built her a bookcase in shop and gave it to her for birthday. She marveled at the craftsmanship and was so proud. The shop teacher didn't remember her kid building the bookcase. She described it. Matched one stolen from his office. Well he was good at something...
