Fresh merch ideas?

One of my bands is putting out a recording. For financial reasons we’ve decided to make it digital-only (no physical media). We’re just not in a position to have a bunch of widgets sitting around.

That said it would be nice if we had some kind of tangible thing we could sell to people who want to support us.

T-shirts are a classic, but it’s hard to predict demand. Screen printed tote bags seem to be a thing these days, and maybe more appealing to non-dudes who might not want a shirt.

Any good ideas? I’d like to avoid cheap trinkets with a logo slapped on them.

Not something I feel like we could sell, but I think we’ll do some logo cookies or some other baked good for our release show. Something tasty and Instagram-ready :)

At moe. shows that I went to, they record the gig off the board and make it available on a band-branded USB drive that includes the show (obviously) but also backstage pictures and whatnot. It's a great thing to get IMHO. Just about everyone uses those little USB drives for something...

If the goal of selling merchandise is not to make tons of money, see if you can work with a local charity to co-brand stuff (e.g., t-shirts). Then tell the audience that 50% of the proceeds go to the charity. It will get you name exposure and a reputation for doing good things for the community.
