fret buzz

I just recently purchased a G&L L-2000 4-string bass, and I am getting fret buzz close to the neck on the e and a string. i have tried to raise the strings at the bridge and it helped some, but it still buzzes especially on the a string usually from the neck all of the way to about the 10th or 11th fret. It also sounds different on the a string just by ordinary plucking of the string. What can I do th fix the problem?

Sounds to me like your bass is in serious need of a serious setup by a pro. If the buzzing was happening primarily from the 1st through the 8th (or so) frets, then it would be a simple trussrod tweak. Except that it's more than that. So...

1. Neck relief is almost assuredly way off.
2. Saddles are probably also way off.
3. Neck tilt may be off.
4. Nut slots may be too deep.

I've always done my own setups, but if one of my basses was as you describe it would get taken to a good tech or luthier for adjustment.
