fretless bass issue

I have a mid 70's Fender Jazz that was customed to fretless by a major guitar maker in NJ when the bass was basically new. He used an old ebony cello finger board and although the neck is the same width at the nut, it is thicker from the back to the finger board. I have the bass set up with the normal relief in the neck and get a great sound out of it on all but the C sharp through the E on the A string. It is almost like a fret buzz on these notes. I don't see and bumps or anything. Does any one have any ideas?

did you try a different A string? or you may have to raise the saddle a hair on that string?

Yes, I have had a few sets of strings on it. I used to have a bunch of rounds on it, now have Tomastik flats. It is very weird but it seems to have expanded over the years. First it was just on the D note on the A string and now it is getting wider as I said earlier.

Have the fingerboard resurfaced by a tech/luthier. Roundwounds gouge the heck out fingerboards, even ebony.

Yes, rounds do chew the ebony neck. I had rotosounds on for years and they did minimal damage but then I tried some DR rounds and they started to kill the board. The Tomastik-Infelds flats are great strings. They have everything the rounds had for me and much more. My fingers and the board are thankful. How hard can resurfacing the board be? I will look into this and get back to you and tell you what I find.
