Fretless Bass With Edgy Tone

Have you tried roundwounds? If it scares you, and you can't bear to mark up your finger board try half rounds first. It's going to have a much bigger effect on the sound than the type of bass IME. Otherwise, think about what kind of bass with fret do you think of as edgy? Well, find that bass in a fretless version. Maybe a stingray, or a warwick?

Warwick bubinga anything. especially a german Corvette
or Thumb bolt on model .

sounds really tough thru tube amps or preamps.
like svt ,hiwatt etc. and 10" speakers. mine does a close John Wetton tone , like from Asbury Park ( a very edgy bassline if there ever was one to compare to...)

also does a good Geezer sound with a bit of overdrive (Bassically, Bit of finger)
and wah or filter follower (electric funeral)
