I'm thinking of getting a cheap, used jazz bass off of ebay and defretting it. I was wondering if you can use wood filler instead of veneer. What are the pros and cons of using wood filler instead of veneer?

I'm not sure the wood filler has the same compression strength as some veneer, seems like it might let the neck bow...

I can do it in two hours
including using Tru-Oil
to finish.

I have had no problem.
But I do agree, veneer may be better.
But with that many pieces, what about
the compression strength of the glue
and air pockets.
I would think that if it was an expensive
bass, by all means, use veneer.
Other-wise, it probably don't make no dif,

Filler worked for Jaco. Given that 99% of the strength of the neck comes from the neck sans fingerboard and the truss rod, there is no difference. The only difference is aesthetics.
I've done wood filler. Sometimes wood filler will shrink, so you might have to do it 2 or 3 times to get it right. Once it was done to get it to blend better I Sharpie'd it, then drew over the Sharpie'd lines with a brown pen.
Sure it isn't "Pro" but it's held up for a few years and wood filler, blue painters tape and a brown pen set me back a cool $7.

thank you! what is an easy way to stuff the wood filler into the little ridges? it might be a little sloppier than veneer because you can't just insert it like a thin sheet of wood...
