Fretless neck refinish question...

Hello,
I am thinking of refinishing an SX Fretless neck I have for a project, it has the infamous orange glow to it and I would like to change the look of it, as well as the feel as the gloss is uneven in places and "sticky" after a bit of play.
My question is how would I go about getting this color off, I have serched the forums here and havent found any info on a fretless refinish...What shoudl I use to get through the gloss? Then, could I just sand through the orange?
On a side not, I was thinking of trying to "block" the neck once I have it to the color I like, would it be crazy to think I could use the evil ebay sticker blocks, then seal and spray over them?
I appreciate any advice.
