Fretless P basses under $350?

That's what I was thinking, if (and I do mean IF) I ever decide to try fretless or a 5 or a 6 string bass, I'll probably try it on an cheapo SX first.
Definitely try fretless! It's so awesome. The only reason I would ever want to play a fretted bass again, is if I was playing Piccolo tuning. Seriously.. fretless is the ****, excuse my language.
Well, I found a local SX fretless, old headstock for an awesome price. It's lined, but I was thinking about ebonizing the board; anyone know if that will work? Anyway, I'll post pics if all goes well.

As the only Fenderish long scales fretlesses that Rondo seems to have at the moment have maple boards, I have to ask how maple compares to other woods as fretboard material for a fretless bass.

I would part together a fretless P if you are not in a hurry. Watch the classifieds and ebay and I'm sure you could put together something pretty sweet.
And I for one love Fretless precision basses no matter how ironic it is...

It is excellent. Feels just right and sounds very good. Love my Fretless P with a maple board. It's been around 36 years and is still going strong.

On fretless.. I've tried circle k's, fender pure nickels, d'addario chromes and xl nickels.
The Fender Pure Nickels are my favorite.

A fretless without the bridge pickup will be rather "burpy". That's why fretless P-basses never really made it. They were the only original fretless basses from Fender, though. Still, all the fretless monsters out there tend(ed) to use a defretted J-bass back in the days...
Why will it be "burpy"? is the bridge pickup essential? is that why fretless Stingrays are so popular? I'm just curious, I'm looking to get into the fretless game, I was planning on getting a Squier Jazz fretless and put the neck on a P bass... maybe not now...

You need the bridge pickup for the jaco tone. Propably the most well known and most used fretless tone. But some weirdos dig the fretless p-bass tone though. Not nearly as popular as basses with bridge pup but i've seen quite few fretless precisions here in tb. So my suggestion would be a fretless p-bass with jazz bridge pickup. I have one and although i don't usually like pj basses it eorks nicely on fretless. You get best of both worlds.
And about the strings. I have rotosound black nylon strings and i absolutely love those. Very unique tone.
Weird! I almost always solo my p-pup on my p/j fretless. I do like the sound of the j pup soloed.. But I think the p is more desirable to my ears.

I guess I'm one of those weirdos too. I wayyy prefer P over bridge J... but I can't lie.. the bridge J does have it's place.
