Fretless Rick?

So I was with my school jazz combo and we did a 5:30 gig to get some money for a trip. We stayed at the bar to watch the other musicians and the bassist for the group that came on at 9 used a fretless Rick for a majority of the songs...and this is a jazz club
I'm just wondering has anyone seen people doggie before? Because I was pretty amazed that he used a Rick for jazz
And it really did sound that bad.

I used a Rick in big band for years. It's not just all about a bass's tone, it's also about the way the player attacks the instrument. There are ways to "tone-down" the bass and adapt it to the style you're playing by the way you play the strings.

The cool thing about it, since it wasn't traditional "doghouse", was the way it cut through, but was still mellow in tone the way I played it. Then, when the band did some arrangements of a more "contemporary" nature, it really shined! I loved those years. Lots of people with surprised looks on their faces back then, too. They had good things to say, though. Helps to make it a unique big band sound.

I used to have a 4003FL I used in my jazz band. Chris Brubeck has been using one for decades.

Thanks for posting this. I heard him playing that bass with his dad over thirty years ago and was completely floored then....still am. He's great.
