I know you mentioned Sunbeams... have you considered DR Pure Blues? Flats aren't really ever going to be aggressive sounding, and you really don't have to worry about wear with rounds IMO.
Most all of my basses wear Sunbeams, but I recently threw a set of Pure Blues on my Sadowsky fretless and like them a lot. A little less mellow than Sunbeams, but with a similar feel. MAYBE a little stiffer feeling, but not by much.
