fretted to fretless!

Why doesn't it catch on? It costs more than a nice fretted and fretless AND you're basically left with a fretless with high action.

Exactly. Why not just get a double neck fretted / fretless? Then you can experiment with alternate tunings with each neck, if you're into that kinda thing.

It doesn't have to be expensive. You could get a cheap double neck bass and mod it into a decent instrument.
 
Of course fretless should be part of a bass players' collection. My reference to a double neck was merely an alternate suggestion to the bass that is switchable between fretted / fretless.

Understood, just noticing that there's an overall fear of fretless, although I think there's a certain extent that a lot of bassists quit or let it collect dust because they either don't want to invest the time or can't accept the risks that you can be off from time to time.
