thank you for letting me in your country all you yankees out there, which reminds me, what exactly is a yankee? why do we call americans yankees?

Haven't read whole thread, so this may have already been mentioned...

FYI, not every US citizen views themself as a Yankee. Mostly, people in this region reserve the term yankee for people from the northeast section of the country. Regardless of what we are called by the outside world, I don't know of a single person from this region that would call themself a yankee. Matter of fact, I know several that would take mild offense at being called one.

I'm pretty sure that connecticut has never actually been considered part of New England. It's considered to be in the Atlantic Region or something like that (along with NY, RI, NJ, and maybe PA?) AFAIK.

 Alex, that would be news to Southern New England Telephone Company, which provided phone service throughout Connecticut (until it became part of SBC) and the New England Whalers, which were Hartford's team in the World Hockey Association. ;)

:D

The six New England states are Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut.

Ehh, shows what I know about my region. Heck, I'm from California anyway, so no big deal.
But thank you though.

You're all "Yanks" to us - even Canadians, if they don't speak French!! :p

It's all Greek to me!! :p

Or Double Dutch!!

Serioulsy you can't expect us English speakers to make fine distinctions like that - we know that due to the Internet, it's only a matter of time before all other languages die out and everybody will speak English!! :D

Cultural Imperialism rules OK !!

Lift / elevator
Chemist / pharmacy
Trunk / boot

Ok...let's not go there. :D

My poke at Quebecois comes from the heart (and ancestry).

Every time I'm in Europe I think, "what am I doing living in the states?" It's mostly when I'm at a bar and I get handed a plate of food with my 2euro beer. I'm studying in florence next semester and dublin in the summer, can't wait to get out of here for a stretch...

Ha!
Don't expect any €2 beer in Dublin! It's really quite expensive here compared with Spain, France, Italy,........

In relation to driving tests.
Is Ireland the only country that allows people who haven't passed their driving test to drive unaccompanied?
We have provisional licences which any 17 year old can apply for. It last for 2 years at which point it has to be renewed.

If you're on you 2nd provisional you can drive aunaccompanied.

You can drive to the test centre (DMV), do your test, FAIL, & drive home! All perfectly legal!

Being a northerner, what's so wrong with being called a Yank? Sure it may be slang, but does it have any negative connotation? We northerners call you people from the south "hicks" sometimes (in a joking or degrading manner), which sort of denotes sleeping with your sister/being unintelligent.
Sorry if this is offensive (it's not meant to be), but I was wondering if you southerners use the term "Yankee" in a similarly degrading way.
