From black to seafoam, a Peavey tale.

So over my weekend I repainted my cheap old defretted peavey.

Peavey zodiac ex, cheap old bass that comes in a box with an amp, you know the type. It was my first bass.

After having it for ~7 years I defretted the bass in '14. Before that, it was a barely playable monstrosity of a bass. No joke. Defretting it made it a much more enjoyable instrument, and after a neck shim was added, the action and playability were permanently improved.

Unfortunately, I forgot to take a picture of the immaculate tape masking work I did on the headstock.

The lotus was a bumper sticker on the back of the bass, that I sprayed over and then peeled off.

The neckplate I wrapped in some faux-leather from a previous project.

I also rewired the entirety of it. There were several bad solder joints (some of which made by me previously replacing a volume pot)

That's very pretty! What kind of paint did you use?

The neck plate looks neat, but I'd rather have a solid meeting between the plate/body/screws/etc.

Used some rustoleum & clear coat.
The neck plate had a plastic spacer beneath it, and the leatherette is wrapped around the chrome metal plate. I did not remove the plate, beacause i had similar concerns

I mean, I expected someone to say that.
Do you think of seafoam as being blue or green?
The bass is greener in reality than these pictures represent it.

Yeah... Seafoam is generally more of a green color. Yours is more of a "something" blue that I can't think of . Sonic maybe? Someone else here will know fer sure.

Pics can be deceiving, but based on my monitor, It looks like a"Daphene Blue" or "Sonic Blue". With the white guard, it's a classic Fender combo often seen on Strats.

Here's a color sample. Not Fender official but from a company that makes Nitro sprays.

So, it was gloss coat, but that is arguable given the results. I sprayed this outside yesterday, and it was breezy and 60s. The rustoleum dried very quickly under those conditions.

I used about three coats, the firat being light and patchy, the second filling in the previous missed areas and so on. No drips!
Used the whole can of paint. Did not use a second.
Did not sand in between. It will be interesting to see the durability.

I then used clear coat.

Also, i dissasembled and hung the bass from a tree branch with a coat hanger, from that hole under the neck plate.

This is my second spray paint refinish, i recently did a friends pbass in metallic navy. That sort of built up my confidence.

Oh hey! Nice chart.

So, the pics make it look like a light sonic blue, but it is more like a light seafoam, or a color between seafoam and sonic blue. Like icecream.

I also have a jazz bass that i believe is daphne blue, but everyone told me it was lake placid.

If he sprayed on a clear coat that turns yellow(ish) it could wander into the realm of Seafoam/Surf Green.
Maybe.... ;-)

(Edit: My Sister has a '66 Musang Bass that started out as Sonic Blue; with a darkened yellow clear coat, it's color is somewhere between Seafoam Green and Sonic Blue.)

Yes, very short scale, 24.5" and 31.5" long that I bought from SmallGuitars.com. I only play very short scale and bass ukuleles. Mine are all under 25" scale and 35" long.
