After seeing the studio footage of Parallels on his J bass I now can hear the songs he's used it on. I also think he may have swapped basses on certain tracks as he goes from his classic Ricky sound to the more middy J sound- especially on Tales...Side 2 has to be the J bass.
You guys all know more than me re Chris to be honest, I've never been one to get get distracted from a piece of music by over analyzing it or concentrating too much on one instrument- I always preferred to just enjoy the whole thing - and let it change my life- until lately as I dig deeper .. In the past if I heard a piece "my way" as opposed to how it really is - I left my brain to always hear it that way.. Like Crime of the Century. In the piano breakdown I've always heard it differently- not on the one- I hear it as an "and" on the 3 (?) so as the bass and drums come in to me they are coming in at an odd time which I love and CANNOT undo in my head. So there it stays..
Happy accidents.
Same with one of our songs- Red Red Sun- all playing live facing each other when Kirk forgot to play the guitar breakdown part so I jumped in at an odd time to clue him in and then when he starts the second time around the whole band seems to jump in time- happy accident - so we / Chris Thomas left it that way..
Back in my Ibanez days- Plus Jon Farriss playing like a M.F.er. . with Simmons drums ! so much fun growing up musically playing together- he was 13 I was 17 when we started..
Good song... Rhythm section workout...
I have to say I was not a fan at first... I had an Ice Cream business in the 80's when you guys broke...
Need You Tonight had major rotation... On steroids...
I guess, as I was making all my ice cream, burning the midnight oil, I heard that song so many times, I got burnt on it... So, that (stoopidlly) put me off to the band... Some years later, the Ice Cream business crapped the bed ( partner problems, not product issues)--
I moved to Killington Vt , from NH to start anew (I also taught skiing) ...
Another instructor had tix for you guys down in Albany NY... I thought what the hell, I wasn't a fan, but, it might be fun... So with scepticism I went...
Well, you guys blew my doors off... What a freaking' great show... I was so thoroughly wrong about INXS...
You guys were so damn tight -- powerful... Hutchense (a heartfelt RIP) really worked the crowd (women were wet to the knees) ... the whole band put out a great energy, to which the crowd really responded in kind!!
And, you as a bass player, impressed the crap out of me!
I kicked myself in the kiester for not getting into you guys from the time you started getting popular and getting air time...
The guy I went with fell asleep during the show!!??
I paid him back layer with a tix to see Rush in Albany, same venue...
He didn't fall asleep at Rush, but he bitched about them the whole night... I had to walk away from him, so I wouldn't punch him!
Anyway, I was looking for a fresh thread, and saw your name with Squires in the title of the thread... Interesting juxtaposition! So I dove in...
I've been trying to catch up, and all I can say is that I am very glad that I tripped over this thread, it has been a lot of fun reading! I've also seen some postings from "friends" from other threads, especially the Rickenbacker Club thread!!
It very, very cool that you were/are a Yes/Squire head from way back as many of us are! And, you had many of the same thoughts about Squire/Yes, that many of us had... Its great that you've shared that with us all -- very candidly! That just made me respect you more!( Trying to not sound like a sycophant fan boy)
After I found this thread, I plugged in and learned a bunch of your songs -- Mystify, Suicide Blonde, Disappear and Don't Change to name a few ...
A lot of fun learning them! You do some really cool/interesting things in your bass lines!
Tight, tight rhythm section... You and Ferris got the girls grooving, hence their pelvic blood flowing, which made it easy for Hutchense to then seduce them -- brilliant!!
Enough jaw flapping for now... Yes, verbose, sometimes I know, my wifey communicates that to me consistently ( but, I'm just an excitable boy!)
CHEERS!
