That is an incredible piece right there !!
That must be so cool up close and in person.
I visited his "store" in SF in the 90's and bought a few pieces that I now realize I need to get to me here in LA- My mate in OZ is looking after them.
One is just the Yes Logo- So cool.
Well, now that you mention it, the bass in "What You Need" feels not unlike when Squire would play a driving part like that(even if in his case he'd only do it for a few bars and then go somewhere else). He really did rock with the best of 'em.
To be honest- Squire had one on the most "rock" attitudes ever in his playing- Aggressive sound, heavy pick playing, one of the first to use fuzz. Always the one driving them along..
It's funny, with all Squires more "famous" lines, it's this little line that he throws in at 7:24 in this song that kills me- I mean, what a line in a song / album / career of amazing lines..
I remember if memory serves, Squire playing a blue T-Bird on that live. I saw Yes every tour from Tales up to Drama when I was a lad. It's funny, at 62 now I don't remember lots, but that stuff sticks with ya!
Oh man, this is great! Haven't seen this before. Love listening to Wakeman talk about getting lost in "Heart of the Sunrise" at an early gig. Pretty funny, because when I was a teen I was convinced these guys were literally Gods (actually, I still think that....
But on another note, big fan Garry, and I want to know more about the GGB basses!
I'm sure Wakeman's mistakes are another players genious moments- The way he plays the "correct" piano part so casually without even looking. It's funny, Wakeman was in my life before I ever heard of YES, Bowie on the Radio, my first vinyl was Teaser and the Firecat- Cat Stevens- Morning has Broken piano stood out as brilliant from the first note- inspiring stuff... and he was probably 18 or so...

I just finished assembling my latest beauty yesterday- I takes me forever but as I now have the workshop and studio up and running I will hopefully speed things up / make better videos with proper sound ( tho the garage w. Fluro lights is rockin..) and start making videos to share..

For this song, when I saw them, he played the white Fender Jazz bass.
Now, after all these years, I know the sound of his Jazz bass I realise he used it a lot.. I has a different growl and non of the round "hollow" Ricky sound..
Also, I hate to say it, but the 2 Greco PMB800's I found super cheap in Japan are not what they seem and not appearing any time soon.
And I thought I was so clever with my translations etc..

After seeing the studio footage of Parallels on his J bass I now can hear the songs he's used it on. I also think he may have swapped basses on certain tracks as he goes from his classic Ricky sound to the more middy J sound- especially on Tales...Side 2 has to be the J bass.
You guys all know more than me re Chris to be honest, I've never been one to get get distracted from a piece of music by over analyzing it or concentrating too much on one instrument- I always preferred to just enjoy the whole thing - and let it change my life- until lately as I dig deeper .. In the past if I heard a piece "my way" as opposed to how it really is - I left my brain to always hear it that way.. Like Crime of the Century. In the piano breakdown I've always heard it differently- not on the one- I hear it as an "and" on the 3 (?) so as the bass and drums come in to me they are coming in at an odd time which I love and CANNOT undo in my head. So there it stays..
Happy accidents.
Same with one of our songs- Red Red Sun- all playing live facing each other when Kirk forgot to play the guitar breakdown part so I jumped in at an odd time to clue him in and then when he starts the second time around the whole band seems to jump in time- happy accident - so we / Chris Thomas left it that way..
Back in my Ibanez days- Plus Jon Farriss playing like a M.F.er. . with Simmons drums ! so much fun growing up musically playing together- he was 13 I was 17 when we started..
Some of Tales side two is a Guild fretless. Also used in parts of Close to the Edge and Awaken.

I've watched the Tales doco a few times now ( the Genesis one is next)- it's great, pretty amazing really with the amount of research and insight the guy digs into- it's funny, I never really paid much attention to the meaning of Jon's vision and words when I got the record in 73 or so- It was all about the music and the journey it took me on. Jon's lyrics to me then were a bit amusing- I guess I'm shallow that way, always into the music more than the message. Anyway, I now see the record a little differently which I did not expect.
I do have to ask- where does he get the individual tracks instrumental and vocal tracks from ??
I mean, it's all amazing but to hear Chris's bass iso at 15 minutes is really amazing.
I'm seeing more isolated tracks on you tube these days- seems there was a lot more a few years back.. Fun to search for "jewels"..
An awful lot of music stems originate from games like Guitar Hero, and Rocksmith.
There are huge leaked archives available for download, but they're usually massive files, rather than individual tracks, and in an unusual format (the file extension escapes me right now, but about the only software the seems to recognise it is Audacity, surprisingly).
In the old days- when you "baked" master tapes to another format or to new tapes before they perished and disolved, various tracks would turn up, usually on a cassette or something similar- and the culprit was usually an assistant at whatever studio did the transfers. I was given the multis of Killer Queen, Mercy Mercy me- M. Gaye.
I was kinda rare for this to happen and easily traceable. But now there seems to be thousands- it has me wondering how and where from ?
It's great and all but a minefield re copyright issues / ownership / lost royalties etc etc...

Yeah, any song that ends up in a game like Rock Band etc has the original stems supplied by the record label, to the game production company.
That way, if you want to play the drums for example, the original drum track gets muted.
Or you might have a bunch of friends playing guitars, bass, and vocals; so the original parts get muted, except for the original drum track, in this example.
Once the game get released, some gamer hacks in to a copy, and extracts the songs in a container format (I think it was VOB, maybe?), and uploads them to a file sharing sites - at least that's what the game developers will say in their defence (it couldn't have been one of their employees who leaked them...)
You just reminded me, about 20 years ago one of my housemates worked for BMG, baking tapes for archiving.
In about 2001 he got sent on some mission to a huge warehouse, like the end of Raiders of the lost Ark, to try and track down a load of Rick Astley session, and master tapes - they were planning a revival / reboot for his career.
It never seemed to materialise, and I think either my friend was the first person to get Rick-rolled (about 15 years before anyone else), or perhaps he's the S.O.B. that started it...
So I know it's a long way from the origins of this post - ie Chris.. But last night was the final show ever for a truly great Aussie band, Midnight Oil. I won't go into how much we played together etc (our first ever show as INXS was supporting and touring with them).. I'm commenting in this forum as they had 2 GREAT bass players- One passed a few years back- Bones Hilman, a great player. The other was with them for much of what I consider their best albums- including Place Without a Postcard, 10 to 1 and Red sails. His name is Peter Gifford and I concider him to be one of the best rock players ever- His downstroke playing and aggression really influenced me.
