From The "Me" Generation To....

to the "Mega-Narcissist" generation?

I want to be clear that this thread is NOT about guns......

It's about the way people re-act to things in a way that is way over the top for the circumstances....

I'm seeing a lot of this sort of thing in the news lately....some silly little thing happens and a person involved is savagely murdered or injured.....

Stuff that in bygone days wouldn't have generated much if any response

Do people think they are so important now that the slightest "diss' warrants a severe injury?

And what's with the demand for "respect"?

"Respect" being demanded from some individuals who, clearly aren't respectable in any way shape or form.

If Mega-Narcissism is king......what's the cause?

Is it an exaggerated feeling of one's self-importance ?....or is it a result of the society we live in ....where people just disappear into the background of total anonymity and feel small because of it......therefor creating a demand for attention?

It used to be "You're nobody 'til somebody loves you"

Now it's "You're nobody 'til somebody respects you"

Or......."You're nobody 'til you get their attention"

As a person born in America, I think people born here within the last 50 years or so were born into a world of privilege, comfort and convenience. Throw in television, sex, sports and politics and you've got yourself a recipe for a grand delusion that can easily lead one to believe the world revolves around them. Particularly the ones that seem to enjoy having a decreased brain function to begin with.

I don't think it is possible to say that any one generation or group all have certain characterstics. There are trends for sure but where it gets dangerous is when we start thinking any one person from what we see as certain group will be act in a certain way.
I think it is better for me to look at myself and ask the question am I part of the problem or am I part of the solution?

For myself, neither. Just an observer trying to wade my way through the bs in an as peaceful and loving manner as possible. :D

Yeah, but if you don't generalize and objectify people, what grounds will you have for vilifying complete strangers?

There should be a war on violence. People like you are just what we need to fight it.

This isn't a rant by some old guy lamenting "kids nowadays" etc.......

I find myself being guilty of over-self-centered-ness nowadays as well.....although not to the extremes that some people take it.

Whether it's just the natural process of becoming a G.O.F. I don't know....


two things on the news last night:-

1. A boy kills his sister because they were doing laundry and he felt she put too much bleach in the wash.

2. A lady that wanted a baby kills a pregnant woman and disembowels here cutting the fetus right out of the abdominal cavity....

then there's the numerous events of a guy being kicked out of a bar for being drunk....and then comes back and runs his truck through the walls of the bar or shoots the bouncers.

3.The other day a 23 year old woman accidentally got in the way of some women taking "selfy" photographs.......for this she was beaten to death.

I realize the media will often "sensationalize" an incident ....or leave out some of facts.......but still

I read this stuff all the time in the papers and see it on t.v.

People going injuriously ballistic over things that don't warrant it........

i'm pretty sure the common thread there was that these people were mentally disturbed....

Is there more mentally disturbed people now than before? Well...that i do not know.

but what i DO know is that throughout my whole life i've always constantly heard (usually from middle aged people and over) how society is more violent and there's more crimes and murders and "kids nowadays" and so on... Its more a perception than anything i feel.

Though i do think that society as a whole is getting more narcissistic. It's kinda encouraged. But does that mean it makes people more prone to commit violent crimes? There's a difference between narcissist and murderous... even if a lot of psychos in history were narcissists. I mean i think sometimes in some ways i'm pretty selfish and even sometime self absorbed. I still never felt like murdering anyone though...

I do believe it's one of the untold issues in the Trevon Martin case, without re-litigating Zimmermans actions. The reality is if Trevon Martin wouldn't have reacted violently to being "dis-respected" he'd probably be alive today.

The worse story of this has to be the texting in the theater murder of last week. If someone "dis-respects" you get over yourself. No ones life is worth any kind of violent action or violent reaction to the perceived action of dis-respect.
