frustrating hum

I have a Jazz bass (circa 2003). It's a sweet player but has a rather annoying problem. The second I turn the treble pot up, I get a very noticeable hum. The more treble is used, the louder the hum.

It the pot bad? If it is, is this something that can be remedied by me - a person of modest electronic skills? Or, should I just take it to a repair shop now and not mess with it?

Any advice would be appreciated.

That's buzz, not hum. It's due in part to a lack of shielding, and then by the single coil pickups.

There are a lot of threads on here about shielding Jazz basses.

Thank you for your reply. I, too, thought that this might be a shielding problem but for one annoying little thing. The hum (or buzz) never goes away. Hands off of the strings -- it's there. Hands on the strings -- it's there. Volume up or volume down -- it's there. The only difference - and it's a very sight one - is that when both of my hands are on the strings the hum is ever so slightly quieter. Thus far, I have simply left the treble pot closed and gotten my treble from the amp, but sometimes that's just too much of an inconvenience. Does it still sound like a shielding problem to you?

wha??? If you roll the highs off with the tone control, how do you make it up with the amp?

It's a far from satisfactory solution -- if one can even call it a solution. I had simply resigned myself to put up with the problem. But no longer. I want a warmer bass sound. One that has punch but one that can also cut.
