Full stack with 410 500W_8Ohm and 115 200W_8Ohm

Hi,
Maybe a stupid stupid question.

I drive two boxes in parallel with a Trace Elliot SS head (200W 8Ohm and 350W 4Ohm )
One box is a hartke TP410 (200W at 8Ohm)
One box is a TE 115 (can't remember the model now) (200W at 8Ohm)

The 410 farts sometimes, even if driven with less than half of the gain and less than half of the master.
The 115 not.

I am willing to change the 410.

Is there a disadvantage with matching a "small" cabinet like my TE 115 with one 410 with a quite bigger power handling capacity?
What if I just replace the 410TP with a, say, 500W 410 cabinet?

Am i doing a clever thing by replacing just the 410?

If you had the amp maxed out, you are sending 175 watts to each cab. Ideally it wouldn't make it fart out, but perhaps the amp is sending peaks, or too much bass at certain instances. Does it fart out if you run it alone? It could be that speakers are performing beyond their xmax, meaning you're sending too much bass.

The difference in power handling isn't so much the issue as is the division of power between the cabs. 1/2 power goes to each box. The 15 has to take it all by itself, the 410 splits it up between 4 speakers. If you're sending 400 watts to the rig, the one 15" speaker will be taking 200 watts, each 10" speaker will be getting roughly 50 watts, adding up to 200 for the 410.

Hi, thank you 4 the reply.
- If the amp is sending peaks, what should i do to avoid it?
- What do you mean with "run it alone"? without playin any note?
If it is what you mean, I will check this evening.

And if I am sending too much bass, a "bigger" 410 would be capable of taking it over, am I right?

Hi, exactely what my concern is: the 115 is taking half of the power, without farting, whereas the TP seems not to able to handle that...

It's usually the other way around. The only explanation is that the TP has low displacement drivers. In most cases a 2x10 will keep up with a 1x15.

The wattage rating has nothing to do with how much power a cab can take without farting out; that's the product of the total driver displacement. Unfortunately only one manufacturer (Barefaced) reveals their cab's displacement limited power handling, so the only way to be sure that you'll get a combination that works well is to try before you buy. And try 2x10s as well.

One year to re-post in this thread!!!

So, I followed the hint of trying with a 2x10. A good one.

Which i think it is: a 2103 From Trace elliot (200 Watts RMS.
2 x 10" Speakers with HF Horn.
8 Ohm Impedance.
Individual driver response 30 Hz-6Khz.)

Hm. I play with my amp settings (i remind, i play in a Trace Elliot AH200 head, in parallel the 2103 and a 1x15" TE 1153, both 8 ohm).

The 2103 is used but in mint condition, and it looks like it just went out of the shop.

It distorts as well, maybe at lower volumes than the old TP410.
Ok, maybe bad luck and need new speakers, but I it is not the point and I don't want to crosspost. (http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f15/team-trace-elliot-part-ii-754449/index5.html#post10702898).

My question is: is it possible that my amp runs out of headroom if i play it with the settings at 3-4 for the input and 3-4 for the Master??? Is it possible that my amp sends bad peaks to the cabinets at such low volume? My 6 band EQ has the first sliders on the left a bit further up the neutral position. Could it be the reason?
