Funk??Godsmack??

This should make alot of people think about what they type about some of the bass players in big-time bands.
Just because the bands music doesn't offer the bassist to show off his chops doesn't mean he/she isn't proficient/versatile on their respective instrument.

I havent seen the above Youtube, but I am guessing it comes from the dvd that was included w/ the Godsmack best of cd (Good times/Bad times: ten years of Godsmack).

Its basically an unplugged show in Vegas- and Robbie Merrill (playing a Spector) does a slap solo... sounds pretty good too.

Robbie is just another example of a talented guy that is good at serving the band/song- and when he is afforded the opportunity to stretch out he gets to shine. there's nothing wrong w/ that- and it doesnt make GS a funk band

Awful clip... Couldn't be any more soulless and cliched.
It's the little gestures between each lick that does it for me, like 'I am a bass master, applaud me!'

I would be more impressed if he could solo without slapping...

not that he did a bad job, but slap bass is turning into a cliche if it hasn't already. It seems like anytime a bass player wants people to think he is cool, he'll slap as fast as he can, and that's getting boring

I remember seeing that a while alittle back, while maybe not the most impressive slap playing to more seasoned bassists but considering what he normally plays in Godsmack it is surprising and a nice change of pace. I like them.

You can always count on people dismissing someone else because they have heard better, can do better, or whatever. I never took Robbie's slap solo as anything but a break from what they normally do- much like the 'unplugged' video itself. It was cool that GS included this for free w/ the best of cd... and I like it. If you dont, cest la vie...

Sorry.I wasn't exactly implying that he was playing straight-ahead Larry Graham-like funk.
With that being said,considering what style of music they usually play,I consider it pretty damn funky.
ONCE AGAIN(!!),it's just compared to what basslines he's usually seen/heard laying down.

It seems like some people need to slow down the bitter train. I liked the solo.
